Kelly,

I have two things to say about this.
One is that I will refer you to a post that Shannon did on training. It's a great example of BPA applied to this topic. The link : http://homeschoolblogger.com/isaiah431819/114675/
She discusses training and the rod.

Two, the difference between children and animals is that children have a will and a conscience. I dont treat them the same (as the Pearls suggest in their comparing a mule to a child) because children can reason. I do not beat them into submission to my will because I am not always right. I must submit to God first and discipline from there.

I do spank, but it is rare, for certain things and followed with other corrective measures (apologies, restitution etc.) to form the character, not to my will, but to our Heavenly Father's. I teach them to reason why they should obey me and God, not teach them to blindly obey any authority. My goal in our BPA family is to raise children who can reason from God's word, think freely and cultivate the fruit of Christian self-government. And most times the best way to reach that goal is not to whip them.

Anna-Marie,
I had seen that you stopped your blog because of an issue with the Pearls but I didn't now the reason till I read this. I have read most of their material, but don't agree with all of their advice and I don't believe anyone should because they are not the Bible. But can I ask, Do you ignore the verses in the Bible that talk about rod and children? You seem to have a real knowledge of the scriptures and using the BPA approach you are applying all of life to scriptures. I'm just curious what your thinking is of what the Bible says about discipline and the rod?
