Rose’s Guide: PA for the home
Yes, I’ll get to the upper grades too, but I wanted to talk a bit about the material in his Guide that will make you say, “Wow! I didn’t know that was in there! That’s very good to know.” Well, maybe something close to that anyway. “Some Questions Answered” (p. 80-83) gives helpful answers to common PA concerns in a nutshell. He briefly addresses questions like, “Why the emphasis on American history?” and, “We need … read on, my friend…

Rudiments Lesson 1 part 2
Okay, I got to the end of tape 1 early last week (still the intro to Rudiments), which is no small task, considering what a challenge it is to carve out time for it amid the music practice and school and housework and family time and church responsibilities. But I’m not complaining because it’s been great. I’m gleaning so much from Ms. Smith. She is so full of the Principle Approach that it just comes … read on, my friend…
Anna-Marie: treasure hunter
If my life would have taken a different turn I might have been an archeologist. Researching ancient cultures and plotting grids; digging away in the hot sun; sifting, sorting and cataloging the days finds. It seems so rewarding to uncover new clues about the past. Or maybe I’d have been a treasure hunter, always searching for the next big find. That would definitely be an adventure! I fancy myself a kind of treasure hunter. Tools … read on, my friend…
PA does talk about more than just American history
In T&L, Rosalie Slater discusses every link on the chain of Christianity (beginning on p. 158) and she goes into detail about civilizations all along the Chain of Christianity. The CoC demonstrates God’s Providential history through the lives of men on Earth’s stage. That means as you plan your studies each year you find things along that Chain to highlight. My kids learn something from every era, in different cultures and countries, in history every … read on, my friend…
Some thoughts on the Red Books
I was doing my Rudiments class last night and found some WONDERFUL (shock!) information in T&L. Those of you who have been around for a while know all about this, I’m sure, but I’ll share anyway. She has listed in there the seven principles (starting on p. 111) and shows how to expand them through the grades. I know this book is about teaching ACH but it was so neat to see it in such … read on, my friend…
Rose’s Guide: reading
The section starting on page 153 begins with the problem of illiteracy in America. He states on p. 155 that “Literacy is one of the keys to liberty and freedom.” Then move on to the paragraphs on p. 155 about the enfluence of the Bible on early American education. He quotes Rosalie Slater, “The HOLY BIBLE has been documented as the single greatest reason for the reading, writing, speaking, and reasoning ability of our American … read on, my friend…
PI Rudiments lesson 1 part 1
I thought I’d update on the Rudiments course I’m taking from Pilgrim Institute. It’s a correspondence course, which can be even better than a seminar because you have time to really digest what’s being said and formulate your thoughts to submit for feedback. Of course I’m not nearly to the point of answering questions for even lesson one yet–and there are lots of them…The first section consists of 4 lessons and comes with a binder, … read on, my friend…
Rose’s Guide: elementary arithmetic
This is strictly my own interpretation of how to go through this section (which begins on p.231). It was authored by James Kilkenney. Rabbit trail here: James Kilkenney’s wife is named Barbara. My parents are James and Barbara. James Rose’s wife’s name is…you guessed it. Barbara. Three James and Barbaras. Kind of odd, no? I must say that I really enjoyed this section more that I thought I would. It’s really amazing how exciting a … read on, my friend…
Rose’s Guide: elementary history
This Guide will give you all the help you need to set up your teacher notebook and create your own plans. It even gives you resources for research and lesson development. The section is written by Ruth Smith and begins on p. 203. This is only my recommendation of how to read this section. It will be beneficial for you to 4-R the subject. Steps for that can be found on p.145. Page 208-211 gives an … read on, my friend…
Rose’s Guide: elementary literature
Rosalie Slater has written this part. The steps for reading this section are only my suggestions. Of course you must begin at the beginning, which is forming your philosophy of literature (p. 329). The Seven Loves of Literature on p. 330 is a favorite of mine. It’s very inspiring. The “soil softeners” article on p. 380 is great reading which discusses the inportance of instilling the idea that internal actions have external consequences. This can … read on, my friend…
